Thailand is a 3rd world country, because of that the opportunities for ministry is abundant. They range from little kids at an orphanage to old women who work at tourist stands with no teeth and black mouths, from people who live on the mountains who smell horrid to people who live in Bangkok who aren’t nearly as bad.
One of the first days that we got to Thailand we had the chance to go to a boarding school for Myanmar refugees. We spent the whole day there talking to the girls that were in sewing class, I got to play some soccer and we just played with the little kids. It was so fun because we just got to spend the whole day playing with them. We couldn’t even speak their language but we could still show them love and spend quality time with them. I really think that they enjoyed our visit. A lot of them didn’t want us to leave. Well, a lot of us didn’t want to leave.
On the Saturday before we left we went even higher into the mountains, probably a good 40 minutes from where we were staying. We were going to some schools that were way up in the mountains that didn’t have access to very much at all. It was so breath-taking to go up there and see what where the people were living and what kind of situation they were in up there.
When we were in Thailand we had a couple different ministries to the people of Thailand. Our first one was obviously teaching English to the kids at the school. But better than just teaching we got to play with the kids and show them love. That was the incredible!
Going to the school before classes started to play with the kids, then at break playing with kids and staying after school to play with the kids. The kids loved it when we just played with them for 10 minutes; they thought it was so cool!
The best part of the day was walking to the school and before you even got there tons of kids come running because they saw you. One time all of us teachers were a playing a group game (that you had to know English to play) at the school and the kids wanted to hang out with us so much that they started playing with us. It was so nice that some of the other teachers knew enough Chinese to translate for them. We ended up going to 3 different schools and only staying for about 10 minutes at each school. All the schools were so small yet they fit so many people in them. The second school we went to had two rooms and they said one room would have 100 kids in it and the other room would have 80 kids in it. At the first school we went to there was a little boy who was probably about 3 and he was so adorable. I spent the whole time we were at that school just playing with him and having fun with him. The third school was really high in the mountains; in order to get there we had to fit in this narrow dirt road/path. All of the kids that came to the school when we were there had no shoes on and were so dirty.
While I was at those schools I realized how blessed we are in the US. We have so many teaching supplies and fun activities and every grade has multiple classrooms and these kids had none of that. They had a shack made out of bamboo where 100 go and sit and listen to their teacher. Imagine their teacher trying to control all 100 of those kids be himself and teach them and then grade their homework (if they have homework). We are so blessed in the states and we don’t even realize it because the school around the corner has so much more than us and we’re not up to date on our computers and the PE room doesn’t have the right equipment. I’m pretty sure that those kids would give anything to have a nice classroom with pictures on the wall and a PE room and a computer room. They have nothing!
I’ll never forget those kids that we saw and those classrooms. I’ll never forget playing with them and making them happy. It was so awesome to see those kids who have a two room shack for a school smiling and laughing at the things we would do. I just thank God or my education and that my classroom was so comfortable and that I was the only kid in the class and my teacher could help me learn……Thanks Mom and Dad.
Next time you see a school or you go to school remember how blessed you are to have that building and pray for those kids that don’t have that in the mountains of Thailand. Pray that someone will go and not only provide them with schooling but also with Jesus. They’re so open to Jesus there they just need to be introduced. Pray that someone will go and introduce them to their Savior.
